What is an ROV?

A Marine Quest ROV being deployed to work

An ROV being deployed

“ROV” is an abbreviation for remotely operated vehicles; ROVs are unmanned, extremely manoeuvrable underwater vehicles that are utilized to discover sea depths whilst being controlled by a person on the surface.

Remotely operated vehicles or ROVs enable us to discover the ocean without physically being there ourselves.

These underwater vehicles are operated by an individual generally on a surface ship or oil rig, utilizing a joystick comparably to a computer gamer. A collection of cabling or “tether” links the ROV to the vessel sending electric signals instantaneously between the pilot and ROV.

Most ROVs are fitted with standard equipment that includes a capable video camera and lights to provide the operator with pictures and video clips on demand. Extra options such as manipulators aid the use of tooling that can include a soft rope cutting knife (aka ROV knife), subsea grinders, subsea dredgers, water jetters and cleaning tools.

Initially created commercially to conduct visual inspections of subsea pipelines, manifolds and structural integrity checks of offshore oil rigs. ROVs are now widely used in many industries, including scientific exploration, wind farm construction, salvage, submarine rescue, subsea cable installations and more.

ROV operations are more manageable and safer to carry out than any other kind of occupied-submersible or diving procedure because operators can remain safely and completely dry on the vessel. ROVs enable us to explore locations too deep for human beings to go safely. ROVs can also remain subsea much longer than a commercial diver, increasing efficiency on commercial projects.
